It’s getting a little hot in here

It’s getting a little hot in here: "

When I first heard on Twitter that I was named one of the 10 Hottest Women in Food by SlashFood, I seriously had to double-check the URL to make sure it wasn’t a spoof site, because you all know what happens when misspell a website name and end up in pornville.

Well, it was legit, and even after an hour, nobody on Twitter shouted “you’ve been punk’d!” Though if I really had really been punk’d, more than likely the person responsible would be missing a few teeth today.

The difficult part of all this is that now I really have to live up to the title…and it means that maybe being photographed in my neon hair rollers isn’t a good idea.

Hmmm…..

And I should stop slapping my head on Wonder Woman’s body.

I really am taking this honor very seriously, and have started off this week with a striptease class with 18 girlfriends at Rancho La Puerta.

Rancho La Puerta is known as one of the premier health and fitness spas in the world, and one of my biggest concerns about spending an entire week here was the fact that they serve a primarily vegetarian diet. No meat, almost no alcohol and no junk food.

Could I go a whole week without steak? bacon? wine? potato chips? Could I survive on just lettuce, sprouts and beans?

The first couple of days, the withdrawal symptoms became almost unbearable. I tweeted for help. I even texted Diane, who was to arrive the next evening to sneak in a stash of contraband chips and booze.

So, in our strip tease class, our instructor told us to imagine a guy sitting in the chair as she led us in sexylicious moves: sashaying our hips, flipping our hair, throwing an attitude, rubbing and teasing with our body parts. All for the imaginary friend sitting in the chair.

This is all I could think about:

and this:

Oh, and no I wasn’t joking about Diane smuggling in the goods. She came through. God, I love this woman. She arrived at 7pm last night with this:

I guess if this is what sexy is all about – I AM ALL FOR IT!!

Quick Look: Smiley Drop for iPhone [iPhone App Reviews]

Quick Look: Smiley Drop for iPhone [iPhone App Reviews]: "

What’s In a Game?

In my experience, the simplest games are often the most fun. Give me smiley faces to shoot at with other smiley faces and you’ve got yourself a winner. That’s what you get with a new application “Smiley Drop” from M5 Systems LLC. Their new game is a strategy shooter that makes you think before you fire.

Switched On: Sony's forward Dash

Switched On: Sony's forward Dash: "Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

In its introductory press release, here's what Sony has to say about the Dash, a 'personal Internet viewer' that it announced at CES: 'Featuring a vivid 7-inch color touch screen... Dash utilizes an existing home wireless connection to continuously deliver Internet content to its viewers.' And according to its SonyStyle.com site, here's what that Dash has to say about itself: 'I use over 1,500 free apps and your Wi-Fi connection to deliver the information and entertainment you crave... right to your bedroom, kitchen or office.' But Dash also has something to say about Sony, and for the most part, it's an encouraging message.

Dash was one of the more distinct category-blurring products to emerge from Las Vegas in January. Its hardware is a hybrid between an alarm clock and digital picture frame and its content is a content mashup between Chumby widgets and Sony's Bravia Internet Video Link offering. Dash was introduced just a few months after HP introduced its DreamScreen, another product that provides 'glanceable' information from the cloud.

Robot Builders Forming Hackerspace in Dallas

Robot Builders Forming Hackerspace in Dallas: "

The Dallas Personal Robotics Group
(DPRG), one of the oldest robot
hobbyist groups in the world, is forming a hackerspace in
Dallas, Texas.
For the last seven years, the DPRG was based in the Garland, Texas
warehouse pictured above but, in 2009, the building changed hands
and the DPRG found
itself out of a home. Based on the success of hackerspaces
in other
parts of the world, the DPRG decided the time is right to start one
Dallas. For those not familiar with the idea, a hackerspace is a shared
community workshop supported by a membership fee that helps cover rent,
tools,
and other expenses. The DPRG is a 501(c)(3) as well and will be soliciting
grants and donations to help cover startup costs. Membership is open to
all types of makers, hackers, and creators in the community and there is
already a wide range of interests that include robots (of course!), CNC,
welding,
photography, hydroponics, vacuforming, and ham radio, to name just a
few. The DPRG hopes to find someone willing to donate land and a suitable
building but will lease temporary space if needed to have things up and
running sometime in March. So,
if you're in Dallas, join up and
help out. Even if you're not local, they're
accepting donations from like-minded folks, so throw a few dollars
their way if you can.

Today we make a trip to Italy, the location of this summer house. The beautiful house stands on Filicudi, one of eight islands that make up the Aeolian archipelago. This small island is situated 20-30 miles northeast of the island of Sicily.

The interior is simple and rustic with some furniture painted in bright pink.

Why testers?

Why testers?: "

My sister got her kids a little puppy, and they’ve been trying to train it. To live with a dog in the house, you need to teach it not to jump on people, not to poop in the house, to sit on command, and to never, ever, ever chew on the iPad. Never. Good girl.

With dogs the main trick to training is that feedback has to be immediate. If you come home to discover that, hours before, the dog tipped over the garbage can in the kitchen, it’s too late for training. You can yell at her but she just won’t get what you’re going on about. Dogs are just not that smart.

For programmers, getting better at what you do requires quick feedback, positive and negative, on what you’ve just done. The faster you get the feedback, the faster you’ll learn. With long-cycle shrinkwrap software, it can take a year or more to hear feedback from customers.

That’s one of the reasons we have testers. A great tester gives programmers immediate feedback on what they did right and what they did wrong. Believe it or not, one of the most valuable features of a tester is providing positive reinforcement. There is no better way to improve a programmer’s morale, happiness, and subjective sense of well-being than a La Marzocco Linea espresso machine to have dedicated testers who get frequent releases from the developers, try them out, and give negative and positive feedback. Otherwise it’s depressing to be a programmer. Here I am, typing away, writing all this awesome code, and nobody cares. Boo hoo.

Who should be a tester? That’s tricky! Software testing is one of those careers that isn’t that well known, so a lot of people who would be great at testing and would probably enjoy it a lot never consider applying for jobs as testers.

Signs of a good tester:

  • Scientific

  • Loves a good puzzle, even the kind that takes days to solve

  • Likes to think about things methodically

  • Generally likes working with software and computers

You don’t have to be a programmer to be a tester. A lot of companies want testers to be programmers who write automated test suites. It seems more efficient that way. This reflects a misunderstanding of what testers are supposed to do, which is evaluate new code, find the good things, find the bad things, and give positive and negative reinforcement to the developers. Sure, automated test suites are a time saver, but testing software covers so much more than that. If you put too much emphasis on those scripts, you won’t notice misaligned text, hostile user interfaces, bad color choices, and inconsistency. Worse, you’ll have a culture of testers frantically working to get their own code working, which crowds out what you need them to do: evaluate someone else’s code.

A particularly terrible idea is to offer testing jobs to the programmers who apply for jobs at your company and aren’t good enough to be programmers. Testers don’t have to be programmers, but if you spend long enough acting like a tester is just an incompetent programmer, eventually you’re building a team of incompetent programmers, not a team of competent testers. Since testing can be taught on the job, but general intelligence can’t, you really need very smart people as testers, even if they don’t have relevant experience. Many of the best testers I’ve worked with didn’t even realize they wanted to be testers until someone offered them the job.

If you:

  • Love software and computers

  • Want to work on a software team, and

  • Don’t particularly like programming

you should consider being a tester. (We’re hiring! What a coincidence!)
